Some gear is mandatory by law, like life jackets and fire extinguishers, while other items—like throwable flotation devices or whistles—are strongly recommended.
Here’s a quick rundown of the Minnesota DNR regulations for required safety gear:
- Life Jackets: One for every person on board. Children under 10 must wear one when the boat is moving.
- Throwable Flotation Devices: Buoyant cushions, ring buoys, and horseshoe buoys for emergencies.
